States with no income tax
9 jurisdictions levy no tax on wage income for tax year 2026: eight levy no personal income tax at all, while Washington levies no tax on wages.
A state with no income tax is not automatically a cheaper state to live in. Each card names one other state tax from that state's own source; they are a draft reference, not advice.
Each tax fact on a card carries the gate the page shares with the comparison route and the paycheck calculator: a figure serves when its row's registered source is that state's own revenue department. Cards whose facts are on a compiled source say so and explain why the figure is withheld, rather than print a blank or a silently-zero number.
What the same salary keeps
On a $96,000 salary, a single filer pays $2,947.20 in Pennsylvania for 2026. The California figure is not on file yet; the reason is below. In a state with no income tax that line is $0, so the same salary still keeps more a year.
California limits personal exemption credits at high incomes: the 2025 Form 540 booklet applies the limit above federal AGI of $252,203 for single or married/RDP filing separately and $504,411 for married/RDP filing jointly, and the 2026 thresholds are not published yet. FTB's Tax News October 2026 says: "The complete 2026 tax rates and exemption amounts will be available on FTB's website in late December." The calculator stays withheld until FTB publishes the 2026 limitation thresholds. The 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax (previously Mental Health Services Tax) above $1,000,000 is printed in the 2026 Form 540-ES instructions. The figure for California tax year 2026 is withheld despite the registered primary-state source (California Franchise Tax Board) until matching evidence supports the full rule scope.

Where these figures come from
The jurisdiction list and the income-tax comparison are read from the draft 2026 state income-tax calculator. The sales and property figures are read from one compiled source; each state's special note names its own state source and the date it was checked. No state-level product data is registered and the US pack is a draft.
Sales-tax and property-tax figures render as withheld until a primary-state source covers each claim. The income-tax classifications on this page are read from registered primary-state sources. The underlying numeric values stay in the row, so a future registration clears the gate without recomputing.
