The all-groups consumers price index for New Zealand, as published by Stats NZ, quarterly from 1914. Each year is the average of the quarters published for it. The 2026 figure stands on fewer than four quarters, because that is what Stats NZ published for it. A national index is an average across a basket; your own costs can move differently, and a single household's rent, mortgage or food bill often does.

What the index actually measures

The consumers price index tracks what a fixed basket of goods and services costs over time. It is the official measure of inflation in New Zealand, and it is what pay rounds, benefit adjustments and the Reserve Bank's target are argued over.

It is an average. The basket is weighted to what households collectively buy, so a year with sharp rent rises and flat electronics can leave the headline number looking calm to someone who rents and busy to someone who does not.

Why the early years are thinner

Stats NZ published one or two readings a year until 1926, and four a year since. This page uses whatever was published for the year you pick, and says so above when your choice lands on one of the thin ones.

The current year runs only to the most recent quarter, so it is a part-year average until the December quarter is out.

Common questions

Is this the same index the Reserve Bank targets?
Yes. The Reserve Bank's remit is written against the all-groups consumers price index, which is the series on this page. Stats NZ produce it; the Reserve Bank republish it.
Why does it not match a figure I saw quoted?
Quarterly and annual figures differ, and so do all-groups and tradeable or non-tradeable splits. This page uses all groups, averaged over the year.
