Income without a sale
The fair dividend rate treats 5% of the opening value of your overseas shares as income, whether or not you sold anything and whether or not the shares went up. It replaces taxing the actual dividends and gains.
This calculation is the simple case. If you bought and sold the same holding inside one tax year, a quick sale adjustment applies and the figure here is not your answer.
FIF income = opening market value × 5%
1Opening market value is measured at the start of the tax year
2The result is income, not the tax owed on it
Common questions
Is this the tax I owe?
No. It is income. The tax is that figure at your marginal rate.
Does the $50,000 threshold apply?
Individuals and eligible trustees (type A) can use the exemption if total cost of attributing interests stays at $50,000 or less throughout the year, subject to opt-in rules. This calculator takes opening market value and does not assess the cost exemption.
