Work and earnings conditions

ESDC describes substantially gainful occupation as work paying equal to or greater than the maximum annual disability pension amount, which is $20,971.45 in 2026 before tax. When a recipient earns $20,971.45 or more in a year, this demonstrates the person is regularly capable of working and likely no longer qualifies. ESDC, CPP disability benefit (opens in a new tab).

Recipients who earn less than $7,400 before tax in 2026 are not affected. Earnings between $7,400 and $20,971.45 may demonstrate that the person is regularly capable of working and may affect the benefit.
