Two different forms of support

The disability tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit that can reduce income tax for a person with a disability or a supporting family member. Approval allows the credit to be claimed at tax time. CRA, disability tax credit (opens in a new tab).

Medical certification is part of DTC eligibility. CRA describes severe and prolonged impairment in a category, significant limitations across multiple categories, or therapy supporting a vital function as possible routes to eligibility. CRA, DTC eligibility (opens in a new tab).

Eligibility for the benefit

Canada Disability Benefit eligibility requires age 18 to 64, DTC approval and Canadian residency for income tax purposes. For current payments, the applicant and any spouse or common-law partner must have filed their 2025 federal returns. Citizenship or a listed immigration or registration status is also required. Temporary residents must have lived in Canada throughout the previous 18 months. Service Canada, benefit eligibility (opens in a new tab).

Published amounts and their periods

The monthly maximum for July 2026 to June 2027 is $204.20, based on adjusted family net income from the 2025 federal return. The benefit is income-tested, so the maximum is not an entitlement for every eligible applicant. Service Canada, benefit amounts (opens in a new tab).

CRA's 2026 indexed table lists a disability amount of $10,341. It appears among amounts relating to non-refundable tax credits. CRA, 2026 indexed tax and benefit amounts (opens in a new tab).
