Support and relationship conditions
The Canada caregiver credit is non-refundable and concerns support for a spouse, common-law partner or dependant with a physical or mental infirmity. Dependence means regular and consistent reliance for basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing. The claim depends on the relationship, circumstances, dependant's net income and other credits claimed for that person. CRA, Canada caregiver credit conditions (opens in a new tab).
Specified relatives can qualify, including children, grandchildren, parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews must have resided in Canada at any time in the year. CRA may request a medical practitioner's statement; an approved disability tax credit certificate covering the period can remove that requirement.
