Savings accounts and term deposits: read beyond the rate

Separate the advertised rate from its conditions

A savings account can attach conditions to bonus interest, such as regular deposits, a balance requirement or an age limit. A temporary introductory rate is different again: it ends after a stated period. Record the ongoing rate alongside the advertised offer.

Read the withdrawal rules, balance limits, interest-payment frequency and fees. Some savings accounts also require a linked transaction account. These details belong beside the rate when comparing products, rather than in a separate mental checklist that is easy to forget. ASIC MoneySmart's Savings accounts page (opens in a new tab) is the source for these features.

For a term deposit, check access as well as maturity

A term deposit fixes a rate for an agreed period. That does not mean the money is available on demand. Early access may require notice and may reduce interest or involve a fee. The exact conditions belong to the provider's contract.

Check when interest is paid and whether a linked account has charges. Before comparing an estimated return with an offer, match the term and payment arrangements. A calculator's assumed schedule is not the provider's promise. ASIC MoneySmart's Term deposits page (opens in a new tab) explains the product and access conditions; its link appears in the facts table.

Deposit protection follows the institution and account

APRA describes Financial Claims Scheme protection of up to A$250,000 per account holder per Australian-incorporated authorised deposit-taking institution (ADI). Eligible deposits must be in Australian dollars. Savings accounts and term deposits are among the covered account types; foreign-currency accounts and accounts at overseas branches are excluded.

Opening accounts under different brand names does not necessarily create separate protection limits. APRA's deposit checker groups banking businesses operating under the same licence and includes an account holder's share of joint deposits. Check the licensed institution behind each brand. The checker gives general guidance, not a decision on an individual claim; ask the institution about the particular account if uncertain.

Keep the comparison reproducible

Keep the offer date and the provider's terms with your notes. Separate a quoted rate, a condition you have checked and an assumption you entered into a calculator. If one changes, you can identify which part of the comparison needs another look.

This explainer does not rank providers, recommend a product or determine your tax treatment. Product-specific rates and eligibility need their own current evidence. Deposit protection, account access and the return estimate are separate checks; none substitutes for the others.
