How Singapore income tax rates and chargeable income work
Singapore uses progressive tax rates for residents: higher income means a higher rate on each slice. Chargeable income is the amount those rates apply to.

Tax residency and who the rates apply to
Singapore's personal income tax rates apply to tax resident individuals. You are a tax resident for a Year of Assessment if you are a Singapore Citizen or PR who resides in Singapore except for temporary absences, or a foreigner who stayed in Singapore for at least 183 days in the previous calendar year, or continuously for 3 consecutive years, or for a continuous period straddling 2 calendar years at least 183 days (employees). The rules for each category are on the IRAS page. IRAS, Individual Income Tax rates (opens in a new tab).
How chargeable income works
Chargeable income is the amount remaining after subtracting personal reliefs from assessable income. Assessable income is employment income less employment expenses, less donations. The progressive rates apply to chargeable income (opens in a new tab), not gross income. The bands are applied in order: the first S$20,000 is taxed at 0%, the next S$10,000 at 2%, and so on. IRAS sample income tax calculations (opens in a new tab).
For chargeable income of S$80,000, the tax is S$3,350: the first S$20,000 at 0% (S$0); S$20,001 to S$30,000 at 2% (S$200); S$30,001 to S$40,000 at 3.5% (S$350); S$40,001 to S$80,000 at 7% (S$2,800); total S$3,350. This is a worked example using the money.financial calculator, assuming Singapore tax residency and excluding rebates and credits.
The Year of Assessment 2026 rates
The bands have applied since YA 2024 and remain unchanged for Year of Assessment 2026, as confirmed on IRAS, Individual Income Tax rates. The current highest rate is 24% on chargeable income above S$1,000,000. The YA 2026 Income Tax Calculator for Tax Resident Individuals is available on the IRAS website. Year of Assessment 2026 (opens in a new tab).
Non-residents are taxed differently: employment income is taxed at a flat 15% or the progressive resident rates, whichever is higher. Most other non-resident income, including rental and director's fees, is taxed at 24% from YA 2024 onwards. IRAS, Individual Income Tax rates (opens in a new tab).
